when harry met sally (1989).
i didn’t know what to expect with this 1989 comedy starring billy crystal and meg ryan. would this film be a stereotypical rom-com which meg is so well known and typecast for (sleepless in seattle, you’ve got mail)? i realize that she can, and does other genres of film, but in my mind she is a one trick pony destined for some romantic comedy where she is constantly in turmoil over an over-dramatic relationship. billy is of course remembered for some slapstick comedy of the 80’s (running scared, throw momma from the train, the princess bride). so the pairing of these two lead me to pre-judge this movie as a film which could only be enjoyed by one if they grew up in the 80’s and not in this day and age.
i was very surprised. i had known this was a very well received film in the past but didn’t think it would stand the test of time. let me say billy and meg are a together (even better than the meg and tom routine) and the way they play off of each other’s comedic style is great to watch.
these two characters (harry and sally) graduate from university and meet for the first time on a road trip to new york. the film periodically displays their lives as they bump into each other again and again, discussing their relationships, work, etc. finally, however, they form a friendship and now the question “can a man and a woman be friends without sex?” must be answered.
this comedy was definitely worth it. the jokes and lines may be old, but the delivery is perfect by these two and the film actually moves at great pace (something I find discouraging about most older films).
