outdoor maternity photos

225I have been collecting pins on Pinterest for a few months now of my favourite outdoor maternity photographs. Being a fan of landscape photography, I thought that having a maternity photo shoot outside would look spectacular. There’s just one problem, and that is battling the extreme cold in the middle of winter on the Canadian prairies.

I know that we will get at least one warm day between now and the end of February. Until then, here are the photographs that will be going onto my mood board.

recipe : the busy farmer roast

IMG_0016The name and ingredients of this comforting recipe have been made up by none other than my mum, her cousin, and myself. Actually, the only part that I played was in the name of this dish. The idea itself came from two crafty farm girls.

I’m sure at one point or another everyone has either made or tried some variation of this ham and scalloped potato dish. After talking to my mum one day about hearty and easy recipes, she had mentioned this one in particular that she had actually made the day before. She said that her cousin, who also lives on a farm, swears by it. It sounded simple enough, and so delicious at that. I couldn’t resist.

The Busy Farmer Roast

Busy Farmer's Roast and Potatoes - 1Ingredients:

1 lb ham roast
2 russet potatoes
1 can mushroom soup
1 cup water
1 onion
salt
pepper

Steps:

Busy Farmer's Roast and Potatoes - 41. Thinly slice the potatoes and place them in the bottom of the crock pot.

2. Cut the onion in half. Chop it into pieces and add it with the potatoes.

3. Add salt and pepper.

4. Place the roast on top of the potatoes and onion. Add one can of mushroom soup and one cup of water.

5. Cover and cook on low for 5 hours.

6. Take the ham out and whisk together the mixture. Place the ham back in and cook on high for 3 hours, or until potatoes are soft.

7. Remove and slice the ham. Add the potatoes and ham to a plate and cover with mushroom soup mix. Then devour.

34 weeks

34 weeks pregnantCompared to my last pregnancy update, this one will seem pretty uneventful. I’m glad!

With less than six weeks to go, I’m feverishly working to get all of our ducks in a row before our little duck comes into this world. The diaper bag is packed, my hospital bag contents are nearly in order, the crib has been assembled, the birth photographer is booked, I’m in contact with the person who will encapsulate my placenta, and my five-year backlog of pictures have been printed. In the next few weeks we still need to set up the stroller, install the carseat, pack our hospital bags, print our birth plan, and I am wanting to have a spa day.

As of today, there are 5 weeks and 4 days remaining in my pregnancy. My doctor thinks that I will be delivering early. So, there could be less than 4 weeks, or there could be just over 7 weeks to go. Only time will tell. :-)))

See you tomorrow!

geoffrey’s 30th birthday

IMG_0007And another one bites the dust! My husband is officially thirty years old, the same as me. This year, he will become a dad for the first time, finish school and have a new trade under his belt, and finally shave his beard. Just kidding. I don’t think that last one will ever happen.

Geoff Birthday 2We celebrated Geoff’s birthday over the course of three evenings, since they’re the only evenings that he has free from work this week. I had asked him if he had wanted a party for such a momentous birthday. He declined, so instead we ended up engaging in a ton of unrelated events. It was not very glamorous, but it was very fun. In essence, it was more our birthday style

Geoff Birthday 1On Saturday evening, Geoff finished work and we went to run errands. The temperature was -22°C without the wind. With the wind, it was -35°C.

Geoff Birthday 3We began at the Dollar Store, then I had a delivery, and we had to get a few things at London Drugs. Next we went to Canadian Tire in hopes of finding welding gear that I could purchase for Geoff’s gift. After not finding anything worthwhile, I had a little cry in the store (thanks pregnancy hormones), and we left.

Geoff Birthday 4Geoff Birthday 5We ended the frigid night with a date at our favourite diner, Pink Cadillacs. With full bellies and uplifted spirits, we finally made it home around 10 pm.

Geoff Birthday 6Geoff’s real birthday fell on Tuesday. After picking him up a coffee and donut, the dogs and I met him in town after school. I had to drop off my vehicle to get serviced. From there, we went in his truck and to the vet college for Holly’s meds. Then we drove back home where he opened a plethora of gifts.

GeoffBirthday8Geoff Birthday 10Geoff Birthday 11We had about twenty minutes to spare before driving back into town to have a movie date. We had a VIP experience and saw The Revenant. It was such an enjoyable adventure. I think we might always have to watch films as VIPs from now on.

Geoff Birthday 13Because we didn’t end up spending his birthday with our family, the following night we went to my niece’s skating practice. Geoff played with our niece and nephew at the rink, while I sat and visited with my sister and her other children. Afterwards, we went to her house for cake, where we played with her five kids some more. Then we picked up the dogs and drove back into town to get our vehicle. We stopped at Tim Horton’s for a treat, drove around and talked about our future, then finally called it a night and an end to his birthday celebration.

Geoff Birthday 12All in all, I think that he had an enjoyable birthday. I had always pictured our 30th birthdays turning out differently, with parties, alcohol, and the works. However, this last year has been so eventful. With all that lies before us in our immediate future, from babies, to moving provinces, to jobs, to master’s programs, I think that this coming year will be even more lively. I hope that you will all stick around for the ride.
