how to : get our baby to sleep

I must admit that prior to having a child, I thought that all babies would drift off to dreamland on their own. Was I ever mistaken. While sometimes this does happen, generally when it comes to her naps and bedtime, we can usually be found rocking and shushing her to sleep. Yet, this is not always enough. Cue the sounds.

Sam Smith

It was definitely trial and error when finding something to play that would lull Remy to sleep. Let’s start with vehicle music. I ended up trying every genre before finally settling on one. I thought maybe she would like oldies like her mum. Nope. Upbeat radio music. Nope. Hip hop? Definitely not. Heavy metal? Worse. Finally, it was by accident that I was listening to Sam Smith and she became a quiet baby once again. I’m not sure if it’s his voice or the piano, but every time that she hears his songs she falls asleep. That’s fine by me since I also love his music.

Womb Noises

Now let’s discuss naps and bedtime. Until she was five weeks old, nothing I tried would get her to fall asleep. For the first few weeks I constantly played lullabies for her. Yet, I found myself crying over them more than she was. Then it was white noise. She didn’t care for that either. A whirring fan? Nothing. Vacuum cleaner? She would stop crying but it didn’t make her tired. Then while scrolling through YouTube one day I clicked on noises of the womb. I’m not lying when I say that her eyes instantly closed and she fell asleep within minutes. I couldn’t believe it. Now it’s all that we play for her. It’s an incredible thing to see, and also makes me very sad. Perhaps she misses being in my uterus.

While every baby will be different, this is what Remy prefers. Do you have any good suggestions that we can add to our list?

2 months

Remy 2 Months - 3Remy 2 Months - 4 Today Remy is 2 months old. She is such an alert and serious little girl. She smiles whenever mum or dad are near. When we talk to her, she babbles back to us. Her favourite words are “goo” and “ha”. She sleeps for 12 hours every night, waking every few hours to eat. She loves her play mat and her change pad. She loves baths, but hates getting dressed afterwards. She reaches for things to grab and has such a strong grip. She only has one dimple. She wakes up each morning in the best mood. She follows people as they walk around the room. We call her our watchdog. She enjoys car rides and walks. When she doesn’t get what she wants, she lets out a scream. She loves to eat. She hates to nap. Most of all, she is beautiful, and she is ours.

Remy 2 Months - 2Happy 2 month birthday, darling!

threadsence is closing

letter

Rather than publishing an uplifting fashion post, it’s with great sadness on my end that I will be writing about the closing of one of my favourite online stores. Over the last year and a half, I’ve written about my purchases and sales from ThreadSence numerous times. Not only did they offer stylish clothing, but everything was always so reasonably priced and shipped quickly. I always received compliments when I wore or sold my dresses from their site.

Why they have to do this now when I’m less than two months postpartum and still hormonal is beyond comprehension. I feel as if I’m losing a friend. However, as the saying goes “all good things must come to an end.” So, ThreadSence, I guess this is goodbye. You brought so much joy into this prairie girl’s life. You will be missed.

jolly jumper tummy trainer

JollyJumperTummyTrainerOn one of our many pre-baby shopping trips, I had purchased a tummy trainer by Jolly Jumper. I had read that belly binding would aid in the natural healing process postpartum. My interest was therefore solely from a health perspective. This tummy trainer in particular said that it would:

– Instantly shape and slim your waist and tummy

– Help strengthen your stomach muscles to return to pre-pregnancy state quickly

– May be worn discreetly under clothing

Jolly-Jumper-Tummy-TrainerIt was quite inexpensive, so I thought that if it did any of the things that it promised to then it would be well worth the $30 investment.

I began wearing the tummy trainer a few days after coming home from the hospital. I wore it religiously during the day for nearly 4 weeks. These are my thoughts on the trainer:

Pros

– It helped with my overall posture, especially when breastfeeding

– It was very easy to put on and wear comfortably throughout the day

– It made me feel more secure and held together

Cons

– It was not discreet under clothing and thus couldn’t be worn in public

– It didn’t conform to my body nicely

– It was very loud when taking it off

– I don’t actually think that it makes you skinnier (which is what it says on the package, although was not a concern of mine)

Overall, I really like the idea of belly binding after having a baby. I just think that Jolly Jumper is not the best product to accomplish that. I loved the feeling of wearing the tummy trainer, however given that it fit improperly, I would seek out a different product in the event of my next baby. ;-)
