goodbye little barn

Processed with VSCO with a4 presetIf you couldn’t already guess from the title of this post, I have some news to share with all of you. We have officially sold our home, The Little Barn. I really can’t believe that I am writing these words. Our journey with this particular home began over two years ago when we began looking for property outside of the city that we were living in. After settling on an empty lot, we had TLB constructed. It was finally finished just over one and a half years ago. At the time, we loved it.

We didn’t really take into consideration the possibility of a family or designing home for children. Those factors are ultimately why we are moving. It is just not ideal for our growing family. So, back we go into the city, and to the same neighbourhood as our second home together, Little Green. Our new home is only two blocks away from our beloved old green house. It is also the same colour, but only much bigger. We have aptly named it Big Green.

Friends, I will be taking a break from blogging. We get possession of our new home in two weeks, on August 26. As if my life wasn’t busy enough with this move, my masters program also begins on August 24. Lastly, it is Remy’s half birthday on August 25. I will therefore return here sometime in September.

leather braided soother clip : diy

Leather Braided Soother ClipI never intended on giving any child of mine a soother. I naively thought that they were just a way to quiet your little one when nothing else would do, and that eventually weaning them off of one would be a nightmare. While the latter still may hold some truth, the former does not.

I think that Remy was probably three weeks old when I finally gave in and purchased a soother for her. Up until then, she would constantly want to nurse without actually always wanting to eat. It was the mere sucking motion that she craved. I would literally spend all day “nursing” her, for if I took my breast away, she would cry. Exhausted and overwhelmed with our marathons, I told my sister and friends about what was happening. Each and every one of them told me to give her a soother. After trying a few different brands, we finally found one that she liked. My nursing sessions then went from three-hour-long stretches to only twenty minutes. Since then, we’ve never looked back.

What we have looked for are dropped soothers. Honestly, if you don’t have a clip attached to the end of one, your whole day will consist of bending down, searching for, and rinsing off said soother. Our favourite clip inevitably became the leather braided kind. They are so adorable, and Remy likes to grab onto and suck the leather in this teething stage of hers. Purchasing one can become quite expensive, though. After visiting Michaels, I ended up getting a pack of leather lace cord and clips for the same price of buying and shipping a pre-made soother clip. Now I can have twelve soother clips for the same price as one! And you can too with this tutorial.

1. Cut one piece of leather cord into two, approximately 28″ in length. (You will know if you prefer it to be shorter or longer after you make one. I personally like this length.)

2. Create a loop approximately 3″ in length with one piece of cord. Take the other piece and wrap it once around the loop.

Processed with VSCO with a4 preset3. Now it is time to begin braiding! I used my big toe to hold the loop (even though I photographed it using a succulent). It sounds weird, but you will be tugging as you braid, so you will need to be able to yank on the leather without it coming undone. Starting from the far left, take one of the four pieces and weave it under, over, and under again until it reaches the far right side. This may take some practise.

4. Repeat this weaving until you are approximately 2″ from the bottom.

Processed with VSCO with a4 preset5. Once the clip is nearly completely braided, tie a knot at the bottom of the braid so that it will not come loose.

Processed with VSCO with a4 preset6. Take a clip and thread the leather through until it is touching the first knot. Then, make another knot so that the clip is secure. Cut away the excess cord from the knot.

Processed with VSCO with a4 presetIt takes me around ten minutes to make one of these leather soother clips. They then last about two months before becoming quite worn. They are honestly the best and most stylish investment for any parent whose baby who loves a good soother.

world breastfeeding week

Processed with VSCO with a4 presetFrom August 1-7 of this year is World Breastfeeding Week.

I always had it in my mind that I was going to breastfeed my baby. I was vaguely aware of the benefits prior to doing so. I only knew that it was “better” than bottle feeding. I was, however, very apprehensive about not being able to get a proper latch and about feeding in public. 

After I gave birth, my modesty regarding my body went away. For her first latch, I had both my sister and nurses grabbing my breasts and helping me feed Remy. I didn’t know what I was doing. Thankfully she latched on instantly, and has continued to be the best little eater ever since. I also have no qualms about feeding her in public, but I do still cover up. This isn’t because I’m ashamed of feeding her from my body, but rather because she eats well under my cover and I don’t feel the need to expose the world to my breasts. We’re quite content with the way we do it.

While our journey hasn’t always been easy (I’ve had mastitis twice, continually have clogged milk ducts, and struggle when she has bad reflux), it has been a beautiful one. I adore feeding her. It’s our special time together. I love when she caresses me with her tiny hands, when she looks up at me and smiles with my nipple still in her mouth, and when she falls asleep, which is nearly every time. 

Not all women can breastfeed. So while I am all for promoting breastfeeding and helping to normalize it, rather than saying “breast is best,” we should instead be preaching that “fed is best.” Because in the end, as long as your baby is fed, that’s really all that matters. At the same time, if we should be allowed to bottle feed in public, we should also be more than welcome to breastfeed as well.

try this : summer pasta recipe

VSCO%20Cam-6Italian Summer Pasta

Makes 6 servings


3 cups noodles
1/2 cup feta cheese
1/2 Italian dressing
1 cup cucumber
1/4 cup green onion
1/2 cup bologna


1. In a large saucepan, bring water and salt to a boil. Add the noodles. Cook until tender (approximately 8 minutes). Drain and rinse with cold water. Set aside.

3. Refrigerate until you are ready to serve.
