lotta from stockholm

Lotta Sanita 6If you are a twenty or thirty-something female blogger living in North America, you are probably aware of Swedish Hasbeens. For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, no, this isn’t another way to describe a group of European beatniks. Rather, it’s an expensive and popular brand of footwear. They’re quite beautiful, really.

Lotta Sanita 1I believe that the fame of Swedish Hasbeens has skyrocketed ever since Elsie and Emma from A Beautiful Mess began to work with them. Since then, they are rarely seen in anything but Hasbeens, as are those who work with them and fans of the site. I, myself, have never owned a pair. One reason is because if you’ve learned anything about me from reading my blog, you will know that I like to be different from the crowd. That is not to say that I don’t follow trends. However, if and when I do, I make sure that it’s my own version of a trend. My mum often tells me that I always find the most roundabout way to do things. I think that she’s right.

Lotta Sanita 2Another reason why I am not a Hasbeens owner is because in my opinion, the shoes make the model’s feet look so little and narrow. While I do not have wide feet, I prefer shoes that fit very loosely, to the point of being too big on my feet. Call it the tomboy in me, but I like chunky shoes! Is that weird?

Lotta Sanita 3So, wanting to own a pair of beautiful clogs, but not wanting a pair of dainty-looking Hasbeens, I stumbled across Lotta from Stockholm. What a match made in heaven! Not only does Lotta contact you herself when you order from her website, but I find her range of footwear to be more alluring, unique, affordable, and what I can only assume to be more comfortable than Hasbeens. This latter fact is most important given than typically stylish footwear for women are not usually easy to wear. Lotta from Stockholm clogs most definitely are!

DSCN6890I bought my first pair of clogs from Lotta over a year ago and dedicated one of my first fashion posts to them. They have stood the test of time, and still look as new as the day that I took them out of the box. It has been a love affair ever since.

Lotta Sanita 4More recently, I expanded my little collection when I bought the Sanita Mina clog boots. I believe that they will be perfect for harsh Canadian winters. After posting a photo of me wearing them on Instagram, @lottafromstockholm and @sanitafootwear have both regrammed the photo on their accounts. I should start charging for all of this free publicity. Just kidding. ;-)))

Lotta Sanita 5I mean, do I not look extremely happy?

a week of halloween: pumpkin pie pudding

Pudding0.jpgThis recipe hails from A Beautiful Mess, and was made by none other than my husband. Rather than having a recipe for a spooky treat, I wanted to offer a simple alternative that is sweet and delicious and Halloween-inspired. If you were wanting something to scare the crap out of you while you were eating it, then simply look at almost any other recipes being published on WordPress this week. Or make something from Gordon Ramsey while watching his show. Either one will do the trick.

Emory

Pudding1Pumpkin Pie Pudding:

1 box vanilla pudding mix

3 cups milk

1/2 cup pumpkin puree

2 tbsp cinnamon

2-3 cups whipped cream

1 cup ground ginger snap cookies

Pudding5Steps:

1. Lets start with the hardest task; making the vanilla pudding according to the directions listed on the box. If you can do this, the rest of the recipe is a breeze.

Pudding42. After the pudding is complete, whisk in the cinnamon and pumpkin puree and put it into the refrigerator.

Pudding23. Next, ground up the ginger snap cookies. I opted to use a tea towel and a miniature meat tenderizer. This actually worked better than I had expected.

Pudding64. Lastly, layer your dessert. Sprinkle in a base layer of cookie crumbs, add the pudding mix, sprinkle another layer of cookie crumbs, and finally the pudding again. Finish it off with cool whip.

Pudding7Pudding8This treat is light, tasty, and a perfect alternative to pumpkin pie, with about half of the work. It’s the perfect Halloween snack.

a blogger’s dozen: butternut squash pasta (geoffrey kurysh)

00.jpgI decided to do something different this month with my Blogger’s Dozen series. As the end of September was nearing, and October was peaking its beautiful head around the corner, I was finding more and more recipes that I wanted to try out on my blog. October is the one month that really has a distinctive taste, in my mind. Filled with pumpkin flavours, strong spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, and other rich and heavy foods, October’s feasts are a far cry from the light meals of the preceding summer months. No other month, in my mind, has such an obvious palate.

That being said, I chose to turn to my faithful recipe site, A Beautiful Mess. Or rather, I had asked my husband to do it. I wanted a man’s take on making their recipes, not only because the website mostly caters to a female-based audience, but because Emma’s recipes can be on the long and complicated side and my husband is better at following directions than I am. The first one that we chose was a true October-inspired pasta. I call this, “A Beautiful Take on a Beautiful Messes’ Butternut Squash Pasta.”

03.jpgButternut Squash Pasta:

2 cups pasta (bowtie is our favourite because it’s dressy and formal)

2 cups butternut squash

1 tablespoon butter

1 cup cream

1 egg yolk

½ cup cheese

salt and pepper

01.jpgSteps:

1. First off, you need to peel and cube the squash. This can be a bit of a challenge, or so I thought. Perhaps my peeler was just dull, but the skin of squash proved to be like a layer of armour. Luckily Baba’s back-up peeler was an ancient weapon of destruction and made quick work of the squash.

02.jpg2. Next take the cubes and heat in a saucepan until soft and malleable. Mash up and stir in the egg yolk and continue to heat on medium. Add cream and cheese, continuing to stir. Season with salt and pepper to personal taste and preference.

3. On a side burner prepare the pasta. One tip I learned while I was venturing into the world of cooking is to add a few drops of oil in the boiling water before adding the pasta. This small action will stop your pasta from sticking together as it cooks.

4. Add the pasta to the sauce and spoon onto plate. Serve with grated cheese on top and a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Finito.

04.jpgThis dish is actually pretty quick and easy to prepare as long as you are skilled with a machete or very sharp peeler. Pasta is a great medium to serve with this savory sauce. So don’t be intimidated by a squash. Next time you see one in the grocery store, just think, I got this.

A Blogger’s Dozen is a series that was launched in 2014. If you would like to be featured in a post, as well as have free advertisement for that month, please contact Emory at helloscarlettblog@outlook.com. Be sure to send any food-related ideas that you may have. Hello, awesomeness!

how do you organize your blog?

PHOTO.jpg PHOTO_2.jpgPHOTO_3.jpg PHOTO_4.jpgPHOTO_5.jpg PHOTO_6.jpgPHOTO_7.jpg PHOTO_8.jpgPHOTO_9.jpgToday’s post is really based on a question. How do you keep your blog organized? I have been blogging for over a year now, first on Tumblr and now on WordPress. At first, I blogged whatever came to mind. If you’ve ever taken a look at Tumblr, you might have noticed that it is mostly a site for art photography and GIFs rather than a place to express long write-ups. As a result, I was posting photographs of our travels, house, pets, films, and eventually, DIY projects. At first, there was no organization to my blog. However, after a couple of months, I began to notice that my DIY posts were getting the most likes, and soon enough I was regularly being featured on Tumblr’s homepage. That’s when I started to take blogging more seriously. Within 6 months, I was inspired to switch to WP so that I could really take off on this blogging adventure.

That being said, I have also become much more organized. I feel that if I have a general layout of the next few days, weeks, or months, that it will positively affect my blog and its overall flow. I want it to feel organic, but subsequently, not too structured. I would love to return to posting 5 days a week, but with the effort that goes into each post — from conception, to preparation, to photography, to editing, to the write-up, to the final draft, it is just not possible. I don’t know about you, but each post takes me hours on end. Right now, I can only come up with 3 to sometimes 4 posts a week. Even that is tough!

Getting back to my initial question, this is how I organize my blog. I work with two calendars, the bigger one serves as my rough draft, whereas the smaller of the two is what I use to finalize my plans. I then keep these calendars in my blogging station, which also consists of DIY books, multiple cameras, and camera gear. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are when I usually blog, so I will try to split the week into one DIY post, one lifestyle post, and one recipe/outfit post. However, I aim to never designate a day to any given theme. I tried that in the past, but it felt too stiff. I also write down which days I will be taking the photographs for the upcoming posts. So, my blog ideas are written in big, block letters, while my days to shoot are written in smaller letters and in parentheses. Additionally, I have everything planned out up to two months in advance. This way, my thoughts never get forgotten, and I feel a huge relief knowing that I am well-prepared. How’s that for organized?

New Years Eve DIY – A Simple Cocktail Display

BeFunky_IMG.jpgIMG_2.jpg IMG_3.jpgIMG_4.jpg IMG_5.jpgIMG_6.jpg IMG_7.jpgIMG_8.jpgThe idea for a beautiful cocktail display actually came from this Restyled Cart that Elsie Larson posted last year (on my birthday!). Since then, I have been adamant on the idea of displaying our collection of alcohol and glassware in a unique and creative way.

We actually had a similar vintage cart to Elsie’s, and so I immediately turned ours into a similar little mini bar. However, after about two months we desperately needed the space back in our kitchen and so my cocktail cart went away. That is, until I had a brainwave to move our bar sky-high. After removing our cupboard doors, I wallpapered the interior of our new cocktail space. Then, I filled it with our best glassware, an apple dish full of sugar, and hung one of my favourite bottle openers. If you are planning on throwing a shindig for New Years, then a trendy cocktail display is definitely a must-have!

Have a safe and happy New Year!! See you in 2014!!! :-)))
