what i wore: blue swan

WW7-3Hello, friends! Can you believe that there are only two days left in the month of January? Where did the time go?!

WW7-2This outfit post today is featuring one of my most treasured dresses, and one that I have worn before in a post. However, given that it was over a year and a half ago, my hair was short, blonde, and shaved on one side. Needless to say that I looked like a man in drag. While the fashion post can be found if you were to do some digging, I’m not feeling overly zealous to add a link for you today. Hey, I can’t be expected to do all the work around here. ;-)))

WW7-1This dress is one that I often wear to work, and for special occasions. I bought it as a ballet dress, and it’s sheer overlay with asymmetrical hem gives it such a distinctive and feminine look. It’s incredibly soft, and flows like a dream. I feel like a ballerina when I wear it, and so, probably to the annoyance of many, I wear it often.

In the words of Nina from one of my favourite films, Black Swan, “It was perfect.”

girl in a yellow dress

IMG_1.jpgIMG_2.jpgIMG_3-1.jpg copyOne of my more recent purchases from eBay was a 1970s yellow dress that I purchased from the Unbelievably Vintage Store. I then had a photo shoot done where I wore this dress, a floral crown, my Lotta from Stockholm clogs, and a terrarium necklace (courtesy of the Hello, Scarlett Store). The snow had melted, and while it wasn’t warm by any normal standards, it was a heat wave for March in Saskatchewan. I could sense summer being just around the corner, and I felt like a little flower child celebrating fashion and Mother Nature. In a way, it was like my mini Coachella, only much further north and without the great music.

Hey, I’ll take whatever I can get.

a dress for baba + a birthday for me.

IMG_1.jpgtoday’s post is a very bittersweet one. first, i will begin with this dress tutorial.

when my baba passed away two months ago, my mum and i went through her house and began to decide what should stay and what should go. i found myself going through her closet and having a memory for each piece of clothing that was in there. when i came across her favourite plaid shirt, i just knew that i had to take it home and do something with it. we also had some denim in our home, and i thought that the two would make the cutest and trendiest dress. i bought my first pattern, and began to create what i call baba’s dress.

IMG_2.jpgthe first step was to choose a pattern.

IMG_3.jpgnext i cut the sleeves and bottom half off of the shirt.

IMG_4.jpgthen i followed the pattern for the skirt.

IMG_5.jpgi also added pleats (my first ever attempt). it was a success!

IMG_6.jpglast, i sewed it all together, made alterations, sewed some more, altered, sewed, altered, sewed, altered … you get the picture. ;-)))

1.jpg2.jpgi also made a huge mess since i do not have a sewing room. my cat loved it, though! however, perhaps leave this out of your own diy.

IMG_1.jpgIMG_3.jpgIMG_2.jpgIMG_5.jpgnow i can always wear something that once belonged to my baba. for that reason, this has become my most cherished dress.

IMG_6362.jpg IMG_6361.jpgreaders, today is my birthday. while i do not like to celebrate turning a year older (what woman does), i am spending the day with my family, as well as at a museum. that is the best gift that i could ask for.

matinee date.

IMG_1.jpgIMG_2.jpg IMG_3.jpgIMG_4.jpg IMG_5.jpgIMG_8.jpgIMG_6.jpgIMG_9.jpgIMG_10.jpgIMG_11.jpglast week my husband and i went to a matinee movie. i had forgotten how nice it is to go to the theatre in the afternoon! to go in when it’s still light out, then to come out and still have the entire night to yourselves, it’s just perfect in my eyes. this is definitely something that i would like to do as a couple more often.

on a side note, while it was much too cold to be going without a jacket that day, i couldn’t help but not show off my lovely sparrow cardigan from anthropologie. it’s now for sale in the shop, so if you like it, you can make me an offer. :-)))

( … this cardigan is now sold!)
