our new crib : a jenny lind

Red Jenny LindWhen we took our trip to Edmonton, AB, our goals were to buy our baby-to-be a travelling set (stroller and car seat) and a nursery set (a crib, dresser, and rocking chair). We had wanted to get the majority of our shopping done in that city as opposed to ours since the province has only one sales tax, whereas our province has both. Additionally, they have an IKEA store. Enough said!

I had always hoped that when we did  decide to have children, we would be able to buy everything from IKEA. Years ago we would spend our Sunday afternoons in the store dreaming about the furniture that we wanted for our future lives. This included their cribs and dressers. When I found out that I was pregnant I was already beginning to plan what its nursery would look like. Creating that finished product would inevitably involve a trip back to Edmonton’s IKEA to purchase the items that had been on my wish list for five years. So off we went. Soon after walking around the Swedish store, we realized that our dreams would have to remain just that. They were no longer keeping the cribs and dressers in stock. Fighting back tears (me, not Geoffrey), we left. Because we were leaving the province that day, we knew that we had to find an alternative store, and choose different nursery furniture all within a few hours. We decided to return to West Coast Kids. I cried the entire way.

Once at West Coast Kids, it had only taken a few minutes before we picked out a different crib. Out of the dozens that were there, only one had jumped out at me from the day before. It was turquoise and vintage-inspired, and was reminiscent of our green, antique bed which, coincidently, would also be in the same room as our future crib. They even both have wheels! We were sold.

Scandinavian crib styleWhile it is not an IKEA crib, the Jenny Lind has grown on me. Now, I prefer it to our original choice. It still has a Scandinavian feel, but is much more unique looking and better fitting with our own taste. Here are the specs on the crib:

A beloved nursery favorite, DaVinci’s Jenny Lind Crib features intricate detailing and signature spindle posts. Loved for its timeless elegance, Jenny Lind graces your nursery with a unique charm and innocence. Jenny Lind Crib meets or surpasses the latest safety standards, and every crib undergoes individual inspection.

  • Classic rich finishes to complement your nursery
  • Four adjustable mattress levels to set a safe height you can reach comfortably
  • Extend use of your crib with toddler bed and daybed conversions
  • Breathe easy with non-toxic finishes that exceed safety standards
  • Metal and spring mattress support gives optimum support
  • Extra strong slats for extra security
  • Support sustainability — made from New Zealand pine wood from sustainable, expanding forests

Apartment Therapy also has a slideshow of these cribs in real rooms.

IMG_0580All in all, and tears aside, this was only another lesson on how life never truly goes as planned, but somehow works out in the end. Our job is to just to roll with it. Kind of like the crib, and how I anticipate parenting will be.

we’re moving on west

Well, we’re not moving yet!

If you have been following Hello, Scarlett Blog for awhile, you might have noticed our frequent shopping trips to Edmonton, Alberta. Here are a few blog posts about the River City: going to, a video, Instagram photos, clothing shoot, getting Holly, and countless purchases from the city, seen here, here, and here

I think that our love for Edmonton is rooted in the fact that my husband and I used to live there. Five years ago, we moved from Saskatchewan to Alberta so that Geoffrey could go to school. It was a mere month into our marriage, I had just received my university degree, Geoff was finishing his degree online while starting college for a different career, and we owned a condominium but were renting it out from afar. It was all too much, too soon. After five months of not finding a job where I could apply my university skills, I let the stress get the best of me. I moved back to Saskatchewan and into our condo, and landed an amazing job at the public library. Geoffrey ended up moving back a year later. He had finished his university degree but not his college diploma. We both felt defeated, but for the next few years continually talked about moving back once we were more stable. We wanted to have money saved up, experience under our belts, and be a few years into marriage. Edmonton has always been our next goal.

In May 2015, I quit my job at the library to focus on my store. After four years, I felt as if I wasn’t getting further ahead, and knew that I wanted to work there as a Librarian and not just as a Library Assistant. One month later I got pregnant, and two months after that Geoffrey began a ten month trades program in the city. Because there are more job opportunities in a city of 1 million (as opposed to 300,000) and there is a master’s program for library science there as well, we finally feel prepared to take that jump and return to a city that we found so challenging five years ago. I also feel as if it is a fresh start with having a baby. Inevitably, we have concluded that Edmonton fits into our life goals more so than our current residence in Saskatchewan.

All of that being said, we have to wait approximately seven months or more before we can move. By then, our baby will be here, hopefully happy and healthy, and my husband’s schooling will be completed. So much has to line up before we can actually take the plunge, from housing to education to careers, to name a few. In the end, it may not even happen. However, we’ve waited five years to be in this position. We can certainly wait a few more months.

Here is a video of our latest trip to Edmonton. This time, we shopped for all things baby.

cactus flower

4.jpg 8.jpgDuring our last trip to Edmonton, Geoffrey and I went on a massive shopping spree for new clothes. We never shop for outfits in our current city, so when we are able to get away, we always make sure to squeeze in time to do so then. This last time I had apparently went flower crazy. Without realizing it, I bought a floral crop top from H&M, a floral skirt from Forever21, and floral leggings, again, from F21.

6.jpg 2.jpgMaybe it’s because I was so damn happy to be in Edmonton that I subconsciously wanted my blossoming soul to match my clothing, or maybe because it was the middle of summertime, or maybe its because I bought these items on two different trips to West Ed Mall and didn’t put two and two together. Or two and one together. Whatever the case, it doesn’t really matter. I bought three great items from some amazing stores for under $50.

7.jpg 3.jpgWhat happens when these happy accidents occur? Put your flower outfit together and go and have a photo shoot with your husband, who is also adorned in H&M clothing. Because baby, it’s an Indian Summer and let’s enjoy it like two cacti in the sweltering sun.

5.jpg 1.jpgHave a great last weekend in September, y’all!
