I don’t know about you, but I love spending time among plants. I feel like it’s good for my soul.

I recently took Remy to one of my favourite local greenhouses, Dutch Growers. It was a misty spring day and rather than going for our afternoon walk outside in the rain, I decided to instead walk around a greenhouse. That way, we were able to keep warm and take in a bit of nature. It did wonders for us.

Remy adores plants. Every Sunday we water all of the succulents around our home. We also have to water the air plants every second day. She loves watching me do it. I name every plant for her and afterwards she plays with the watering can and plant mister.

It took me years to get acquire a green thumb, so I hope to instill one in Remy at a young age. I’m already very lucky that she has such an interest in greenery!

If anyone ever finds themselves on the Canadian prairies, then please stop by Dutch Growers. You will not be disappointed.

Oh, Pinterest, you slay me. You are the cause of my late nights, and the inspiration behind my latest endeavours. I turn to you for warmth and comfort, and you never cease to lift me up when I am down. I hope that our relationship will continue to grow, our bond deepen, and that you will never leave me. I think that I love you. Does anyone else feel this way?

I never gave much thought a Laundry Room before planning The Little Barn. In fact, our last one consisted of an old washing machine in the middle of our bathroom, sans a dryer. However, our new Laundry Room is quickly become the most diverse and important space of our new home. Isn’t that funny? This room has to function as a Mud Room, Office, Closet, Dog Room, Greenhouse, and Laundry Room, in addition to having access to the crawlspace beneath our home. Tall order. The size? 11′ x 9’10”. Can we do it? Yes we can!

Here are my reigning finds on Pinterest that are making me excited to create (rather than cower away from) this multi-functional space. I call the style primitive-meets-farmhouse-modern.

During our last Edmonton trip, my husband and I ended up buying the majority of our lighting for The Little Barn. You must be thinking, ‘Whaaaaaaat? That must have cost hundreds, and possibly even thousands of dollars!’ Heck no, it didn’t. Would you like to know why? Well I have one word for you, IKEA. After purchasing three lights for our kitchen, one for our bathroom, two for our mudroom, and three for both of our bedrooms, our total bill was approximately $250. Success.

blueprints to my heart

Can you believe that I have been discussing The Little Barn for over two months now, and I have yet to show you the blueprints? I’ve shown you guys our lot, our design ideas, our windows, our exterior materials, our appliances, and more recently, our spare bedroom inspiration, but nothing on our finished plans! #Whoops #ItSlippedMyMind

What began as my husband and I drawing up our visions of a home that suited our current needs, and hopefully those going into the near future as well, then turned into our contractor modifying the design ever so slightly on his computer, to finally, an architect adding his part with professionally drawn blueprints. While the scanned pictures that you will see today pale in comparison to our own stunning copies, I hope that it will do the trick in giving you further insight into the making of our new home.

I’ve stared at these prints so many times that they no longer seem surreal. Yet, I will never forget the first time that they were physically handed to us. We were standing in our contractor’s driveway, in 30°C weather, and using his scalding black SUV as a tabletop. I couldn’t have been more thrilled about seeing our future home from so many different angles, and with such precise measurements and detail. It could have been the heatstroke, but I swear that up until that point, nothing had made me more happy in our real estate trials thus far than these long white sheets of paper with scribbles all over them. (Literally scribbles. Our contractor proceeded to scribble all over them.)

Oh, house building. How we thrive on such small successes.

let’s cuddle in the spare bedroom and discuss decor

Our two spare bedrooms in Little Green were a mix between country and rustic. When I had initially decorated them, I was going for more of a country/modern look, but over the next two years I had changed the layouts and content of the two rooms so much that they no longer had a defined style. They were stuck between a randomized bohemian look, sort of like a clown from a travelling circus was told to decorate each room and he did so, while on drugs. They were a mess.

I’ve been gathering ideas for spare bedrooms from all over the internet. This time, I would like a defined style, and to know exactly what furniture is going into the room as well as the layout before we move in. That way, my psychotic clown alter ego will be at bay and my usual anal retentive, organized self will be able to take over.
