our date with elle

Screen Shot 2014-08-21 at 7.45.44 PMA few Sundays ago, we had a spontaneous date with my oldest niece Ellie. It was a big deal. Not having children of our own, we became her sole caregivers for the afternoon. Everything was dependent on us; her fun, her safety, her life, basically. It was a responsibility that I did not take lightly, and I treated the day like a mission. Mission, Possible.

3.jpgAfter we loaded her up in our vehicle, we drove out to the lake to check on the progress of our new property. As soon as we got there, the skies opened up and it began to pour. That didn’t stop us from grabbing our umbrellas and running up and down the gravel and dirt piles. Ellie called it a mountain. Apparently, we have a mountain on our lot. Aren’t we lucky?

When it begun to come down even harder, we ran back into the vehicle for cover. We drove to the other side of the lake where there happened to be an Open House that day. We planned on stopping in, but before we did so, we wanted to dip our toes in the lake since it had stopped raining and the sun was coming out. Elle and I approached the water, and just as I was telling her that it was slippery and to be careful, she fell in. Oops. With her boots full of water (and snails, she said), we started to dry her off. Then it started to pour, again. Geoffrey picked her up and I ran after them back to the vehicle. So much for our plans. We now had a wet niece sitting in her booster seat, sans pants, and wrapped in a towel. We put her clothes and boots on the vents, and asked her if she wanted to go home. Her response? She was having too much fun, so no. What a brave girl.

6.jpg8.jpg4.jpg5.jpg7.jpgOn our way back into town, we stopped by a Strawberry Ranch. Geoffrey went to ask if they were open for picking while I began dressing Ellie in the vehicle. When he came back he informed us that they were over-picked the day before, and that it’ll be a few more days until the berries are ready again. This was not the afternoon that I had envisioned. Back into the vehicle we went, and this time, we visited a vegetable and antique market that we knew was open for business. We bought Elle some ice cream, and we took our little (wet) pants party outside to the picnic tables. The sun was definitely out to stay, and it had turned into a perfect August afternoon; hot, but with a cool breeze.

9.jpg10.jpgAfter our niece was successfully hopped up on sugar, we made one last stop at a nearby greenhouse. She picked out two plants, both with amazing plant names. Ellie chose Candy Stripe for herself, and Chocolate Chip for her little sister Isla. We loaded everyone and everything up one last time, and made the 40 minute drive back to my sister and brother-in-law’s home. When we got there, Ellie said that four hours with us was not long enough, and next time, she wants to make it eight.

sea of love

1.jpg 2.jpg3.jpg 4.jpg5.jpgLast weekend my husband, sister, sister’s children, and I spent the day at one of our provincial parks. The sun was out and it was a cool 23°C (73°F), but that didn’t stop the little ones from stripping down and playing on the beach. Ellie was the bravest, and spent a good few hours in the lake practicing her front and back strokes. We had a huge picnic, spent some time playing in the park, and all came away successfully burnt and tired.

Yesterday was Ellie’s 6th birthday. Similar to last weekend, we spent the day at the beach in a provincial park. However, this time we went to “Emmy’s Beach” as my niece likes to call it. It was incredibly fun, and a very different party from last year. And with good reason! So much has changed within our family over the course of one year. What didn’t change is that the people who love Ellie dropped everything and came together to spend the day with her. If only we could always get that special treatment as we grow older. Oh, to be 6 years old again.

so long july.

IMG_1191_2IMG_1196IMG_1255we celebrated the ending of june and the beginning of july with my nephew’s first birthday party. it was filled with children, sweets, presents, laughs, and much happiness.

IMG_1275IMG_1311IMG_1312july 1 was canada day! we wore white and spent the night along the riverbank photographing fireworks. they were beautiful.

IMG_1524 IMG_1525 IMG_1529IMG_1535we had a few date nights where we tried out new restaurants. they were yummy!

photo-6-1i had an impromptu photo shoot with my mum and her (favorite) newfie. is she not the prettiest person ever?

IMG_2211then we had a family supper at little green. although it was only for my parents, brother, and sister and their spouses and little ones, it consisted of thirteen people! (fourteen if you count the little girl in my sister’s tummy.) the supper doubled as a going away party for my brother, his wife, and their two children who are moving across the country at the end of this week.

IMG_1914luckily, i got to enjoy some quiet, early mornings like these with my girl holly.

IMG_1856 IMG_1862then it was time for my niece’s birthday party. this time there were even more family members, presents, laughs, and food.

IMG_2293we had my dad come and stay with us for a night.

IMG_2190 IMG_2193 IMG_2197we also managed to get another date night in where we went to my favorite old theatre and saw the iceman. it was a fantastic film!

IMG_2202of course, it wouldn’t be a successful month without selling dozens of items from the hello scarlett store.

IMG_1865 IMG_1871IMG_1882IMG_1899 as always, our evenings came to an end with a long walk in our neighbourhood. i will never, ever grow tired of living next to the river. neither will holly or truman.

IMG_1904july was a very busy but at the same time a very fun month! i hope that next month we can find more time to slow down and enjoy the warm weather before fall starts creeping in. :-)

see you all in august!
