3 best warm weather dresses

off%20the%20shoulderWhen things start to warm up outside, you want your wardrobe to follow suit. This year, there are a few different dresses that you need to add to your closet that will keep you feeling cool while looking fabulously fashionable.

Take a look at these top dress styles for the the coming season.

The Off-the-Shoulder Dress
Off-the-shoulder dresses have come back in a big way this season. They’re a trendy way to show off a bit of skin in a way that won’t leave you feeling overexposed. According to My Fashion Life, Kate Beckinsale perfectly demonstrated the trend at the New York premiere of her latest movie, Love and Friendship.

“Shoulders are having a major fashion moment,” My Fashion Life wrote. Beckinsale rocked the trend “in a simple yet sophisticated off-shoulder navy mermaid dress by Vatanika teamed with fishnet Louboutin heels adding a touch of goth glam to the look with black nail polish.”

Follow her premiere style and you can’t lose.

shirt%20dress2The Shirt Dress
There’s two kinds of shirt dresses. The first looks like an oversized T-shirt, with its loose lines and comfy, relaxed feel. You can usually find them in everything from cotton blends, to a jersey knit fabric. They’re fairly casual, but they’re certainly cute enough to wear out for a day of shopping or a girls’ night in.

The other is a button-up variety that’s either fitted throughout the bodice or cinched with a belt to accentuate the wearer’s curves. They’re usually seen as a bit more formal, or at the very least, it’s more commonly seen in high fashion settings. The designers featured on Lyst range from top names like Michael Kors, Armani, and Versace, proving that these dresses are more than a cosy coverup. Feel free to wear one of these to work, meetings, or out on the town for date night.

slip%20dress5The Slip Dress
These slinky dresses used to be meant for under your clothes, but they’re quickly becoming a staple for outerwear among the fashion elite. A trend alert from Platform recommends a few different styles with varying details, but it also sets decent guidelines by suggesting pairing them with boots if it’s chilly or sandals for a dainty, feminine summer look.

Granted, the slip dress can be pretty revealing on its own. So if it doesn’t leave enough to the imagination for your liking, it’s a great piece to play with in a layered outfit. You can try it out under jackets or cardigans, as well as over a pair of leggings. It’s doesn’t have to be your main focus, but it can certainly help you create a fashion-forward outfit that you can’t achieve otherwise.

These dresses are summer and mommy approved. Find yours before it’s too late!

past the golden hour

SHEIN Dress - 3I wanted to try an after Golden Hour photo shoot. The evenings are getting shorter, and I had never successfully done one before. While the lighting can be tricky, the shots don’t always come out clear. Even with a tripod. I also move around a lot when having my picture taken, so that certainly doesn’t help when the camera is already having difficulty focusing.

SHEIN Dress - 1

I will definitely need to experiment more with the editing tools in my Lightroom program. Until then, these were the results.

Enjoy your last day in November, all!

cropped swing jacket : restyle

Jacket OOTD - 8Now that my tummy is ever-expanding, I decided to go on a shopping spree for my favourite style of jacket; the swing jacket! They not only provide a nice contract for wearing longer dresses, but ample room for any shape and size that exists beneath the coat as well. Plus, I think that they exude the perfect blend of a timeless look with a retro vibe. Honestly, they’re just the cutest!

I purchased my first cropped swing jacket nearly 10 years ago. It was grey and black, with a Peter Pan collar, and ¾ length sleeves by the brand Vero Moda. For six years, I wore it everywhere, and in every season. I took it to Switzerland, France, and the UK, had it when we lived in Saskatchewan, then Alberta, and visited the Northwest Territories, Ontario, and Quebec. I also wore it when I put my St. Bernard down. Wherever I went, it went. Eventually, my mum began to call it ‘The Rag’. It certainly wasn’t in tatters, but it was beginning to look worn. Grudgingly, I dropped it off at the consignment store a few years ago. Being one to having a hard time letting go of things, I have missed it everyday since. I had made so many memories whilst wearing that coat, that it remains my favourite one to this day.

Scarlett 154(Also on the day Scarlett was put to sleep.)

Every time that I visit a thrift store, I look for that coat.  A few weeks ago, and while I was on the hunt for a new swing jacket, I came across one that reminded me of ‘The Rag’. It was a few sizes bigger, was a different name brand, and had a plaid pattern. However, it was grey and black, cropped, and had ¾ length sleeves, pockets, and a collar. The best part was that it was only $10. I bought it that day, took it home, and began to restyle it.

Jacket OOTD - 3The first thing that I did was remove the epaulettes and buttons that were sewn onto the shoulders. Next, I mended a few snags that were visible. Lastly, I added pink lace to the interior of the pockets. My last coat did not have this feature, but I feel like it made it look more effeminate. Plus, I’m a sucker for lace.

Jacket OOTD - 4Jacket OOTD - 6Here’s the finished product. It is certainly not my old jacket, but will make do until I can one day find it again. Have a great week!

etsy : items i love

il_fullxfull.678882601_ol3zEtsy, you have to stop being so lovely. I think that one of the greatest/worst aspects about the site is that it keeps track of all the new items that were added by your favourite sellers while you were away. Also, the suggested items. I swear that they’re mind readers over there. I always find more to love each time that I visit the darn site.

il_fullxfull.761782787_hk5z1. Buried Under The Snow (Salt Bowl) by GusandRami.

il_fullxfull.665462221_plde2. Peter Pan Collar Blouse by ArrowheadClothing.

Do you have any great sellers that I should look at?

what i bought // minkpink and vintage rocking horses

WIB 1-1I am an avid supporter of shopping online. I even do my part to contribute to this new age phenomena. Gone are the days when you have to physically walk into a store to find some really great items. There are quite literally millions of websites that will allow you to shop their inventory without lifting so much as a finger. Ok, so maybe you will have to move just one, but not more than that.

One of my favourite clothing stores in the province, Cade Style Lounge, is located 2.5 hours away from where I live. I follow their Instagram page as a way to be able to shop and support them since they, too, are a small business. Plus they have some really cool stuff. I previously dedicated an entire post to a purse that I bought from Cade. I still wear it, and only it.

WIB 1-6Last week I ended up seeing a shirt that I liked on their Instagram page. I contacted them through direct message, and after it was all said and done, I ended up getting:

1. Vintage Rocking Horse necklace

2. MINKPINK crop top

3. Gentle Fawn leggings

4. Cade bracelet (free)

Obviously, the many advances in technology make our lives so much simpler. They also allow small businesses to increase their traffic by reaching further audiences, which consequently increases their sales. As an owner of a retail store, I know that I would never be able to operate successfully without my presence on these sites, namely Instagram. While many may disagree with my proclamations on the benefits of social media platforms, I personally think that the strengths outweigh the negative aspects. At least in regards to local shops. I can only hope that these advances will persist. Until then, I will not only continue promoting my store, Potomac Trading Post, Ltd., but will also be an avid supporter of other independent shops. I hope that you will too!

Have the best weekend! See you on Monday.
