cactus flower

4.jpg 8.jpgDuring our last trip to Edmonton, Geoffrey and I went on a massive shopping spree for new clothes. We never shop for outfits in our current city, so when we are able to get away, we always make sure to squeeze in time to do so then. This last time I had apparently went flower crazy. Without realizing it, I bought a floral crop top from H&M, a floral skirt from Forever21, and floral leggings, again, from F21.

6.jpg 2.jpgMaybe it’s because I was so damn happy to be in Edmonton that I subconsciously wanted my blossoming soul to match my clothing, or maybe because it was the middle of summertime, or maybe its because I bought these items on two different trips to West Ed Mall and didn’t put two and two together. Or two and one together. Whatever the case, it doesn’t really matter. I bought three great items from some amazing stores for under $50.

7.jpg 3.jpgWhat happens when these happy accidents occur? Put your flower outfit together and go and have a photo shoot with your husband, who is also adorned in H&M clothing. Because baby, it’s an Indian Summer and let’s enjoy it like two cacti in the sweltering sun.

in the store // prairie dogs and wild foxes

14.jpgWelcome you devoted Hump-Day readers! You might have noticed that my post today has two titles. TWO!! Or you might still be half asleep and not understanding why I’m shouting numbers at you. It’s because not only did my husband and I stage a photo shoot with our beloved pets, but I also took the opportunity to combine it with what is new in my store Potomac Trading Post, Ltd. Huzzah! How’s that for smart blogging and marketing? (Actually, not very. It’s been done before.)

a lumberjack and his dog

1.jpg 2.jpg4.jpg 5.jpg6.jpg 7.jpg8.jpg 9.jpg11.jpg 13.jpg14.jpg15.jpg 16.jpgTowards the end of Spring and beginning of Summer, we took a trip to the same national park that we tend to visit for every one of our wedding anniversaries. While we were there during our last visit, I photographed Geoffrey (my husband) and Truman (my dog) in the wilderness. At the time, I was planning on creating my own pet photography business, and I was using them to build my portfolio for documentary-style pictures. After all, cheap subjects are the best subjects. Wait, does that even make sense? Regardless, my plans didn’t really come to fruition over the Summer months like I had intended them to. Mostly because I was too busy with work, travel, or planning our house. More recently, it is because another venture has come up. This is something that I am so excited to share with you all, but not today.

Geoffrey and Truman were incredibly fun and easy to shoot. With a camera, not a gun. With the slim pickings of clothing that he brought on our camping trip, I did my best to coordinate his outfit to fit the Manly Lumberjack look that I was going for. A wool jacket, crew neck sweater, jeans, hat, and dark shoes had to suffice. After studying some animal photography books, I began our session indoors, and eventually took it into the great outdoors where we had more freedom to roam and thus more flexibility within the photographs. We also had waited for an overcast day to help with the mood. During editing, I heightened the contrast, added more green and purple tones, and utilized the zoom and blur features within Photoshop.

The only element that was missing was having a hammock for Geoffrey to lay in. If you are one of the lucky ones that owns a hammock, here are some tips on how to wash them!

girl in a yellow dress

IMG_1.jpgIMG_2.jpgIMG_3-1.jpg copyOne of my more recent purchases from eBay was a 1970s yellow dress that I purchased from the Unbelievably Vintage Store. I then had a photo shoot done where I wore this dress, a floral crown, my Lotta from Stockholm clogs, and a terrarium necklace (courtesy of the Hello, Scarlett Store). The snow had melted, and while it wasn’t warm by any normal standards, it was a heat wave for March in Saskatchewan. I could sense summer being just around the corner, and I felt like a little flower child celebrating fashion and Mother Nature. In a way, it was like my mini Coachella, only much further north and without the great music.

Hey, I’ll take whatever I can get.

and here.

this week, rather than having another fashion post presented through pictures and a story, i am presenting you a with video of my closet mixed with items from the hello scarlett store!!

have you ever seen the blog fancy treehouse? coury combs is by far the loveliest one of the loveliest people around. her site features beautiful items for sale, all of which she models. yet, it was her short photo shoot videos that were uploaded to her instagram that served as the sole inspiration for my newest video. when i watched them (over and over) i thought to myself, i could do that! so i did. :-)

this is not any sort of video, but one that showcases my changing looks for changing seasons; summer and fall.  this is such a tricky time regarding one’s wardrobe. one day you may be dressing down to accommodate weather for an indian summer, whereas the next day you are bundling up and anticipating snow to fall at any given moment. however, spontaneity and variety are what keeps fashion fresh and fun, and a person on their pretty little toes!!

IMG_5.jpg

might i add that i prefer bundling up with lots of beautiful layers as opposed to wearing next to nothing? ;-)))

p.s. i hope that you enjoy the first of many hello scarlett fashion videos, as well as the music by one of my own style icons; robyn!!
