winter children

Even though the weather is cold, we still make a point of spending either the morning or afternoon outdoors. Because Remy and Wilder are not yet in school, staying indoors all day long is enough to make us all go crazy. We all feel better (and much more tired) after getting some Vitamin D!

The other day when we were at the park, I was trying to convince them to go back home so that I could start lunch. Remy turned to me and said, “but we are winter kids, mum. We don’t need to go inside. We are warm enough out here.” It was so sweet and innocent and I was really proud of her for saying that. I think that it was about -20C that morning and we had already been out for over an hour, but the cold wasn’t phasing her. If only I had the same ability to always look at life through rose coloured glasses.

This morning we decided to stay home and go sledding on our little hill. We worked on our snow fort and played pirates on the jungle gym. It was just below zero that morning (which is incredibly warm for the end of December), so the cats were sunning themselves on the deck. That is, when they weren’t eating compost with our dogs.

This is just a regular thing that we do everyday and I probably take for granted at times. I wanted to document it at least once, because they won’t be this young forever. I feel lucky to live where we do and with our winter children.

happy easter

It has been a long winter here in Saskatchewan, and as of last week the wind was still blowing and the snow was still coming down. Part of me feels as if there is no end in sight to these cold months, but then the sun comes out and I see the geese returning and I am reminded that it is spring after all.

I wanted to include a quote within this post in order to remind myself (and any others that might need it) that warmer days are near. However, I ended up coming across so many wonderful ones that I couldn’t help but include them all!

I wish nothing but hopefulness and sunshine and rejuvenation for you during this season. Happy Easter from our little prairie family to you!!

Hal Borland

po the saint

We recently added a new member to our household! Friends, meet Po, our St. Bernard.

This little girl is my fourth Saint and Remy and Wilder’s first. I’ve waited many years to get her, having wanting to be settled on an acreage before we did. We knew that moving out here meant that we could finally get one, and so last week we did!

So far she is very quiet and very sweet. I have had a couple of friends with kids over on different days, and everyone can’t believe how good and calm she is. They have all said that she doesn’t act like a puppy and it’s like we don’t even have a dog in the house. I asked for a calm temperament (because of our children) and I guess it paid off!

Remy adores her and Truman has even warmed up to her as well. We hope that her mellow attitude will rub off on him. Nothing seems to phase her, which is the opposite of Tru.

For now, this is our life with Po.

good-bye, dear prudence

Most of you don’t know this but Hello, Scarlett is actually named after my former dog, Scarlett O’Hara. Like Prudence, she also died from cancer at a young age. Scarlett was also Prudence’s half-sister. My entire blog is a reminder that we should love often, without regret, and with our whole heart. Never shall we forget those furry friends who give us a reason to get up every morning.

Although Prudence was bratty for the first 4 years of her life, and although she never came across a cat that she didn’t want to chase, she was the kindest, funniest, and most gentlest giant that ever lived. My parents were the ones who looked after Prudence, and I am eternally grateful for the life that they gave to her. She loved every person that she ever met, all of her brothers and sisters, every meal that was dished out for her,  every grooming (even though she was ticklish), every new day, afternoon, and night, every snowfall, every pond and puddle, and every animal that she played with, hunted, got kicked by, or ate. I am also thankful that I was able to spend the last minutes of her life with her. I know that she is thankful for all of these things as well.

I’ll miss you Pruby Tuesday. You’re gone with the wind, and you took a big part of me with you.

Dear Prudence
August 2008 – May 2014
Rest in peace my big, beautiful Saint.

Train roll on, on down the line,
Won’t you please take me far away.
Now I feel the wind blow, outside my door,
I’m leavin’ my woman at home, oh yeah.

Tuesday’s gone with the wind,
My baby’s gone, gone with the wind.
And I don’t know, oh, where I’m goin’.
I just want to be left alone.
Well when this train ends, I’ll try again.
I’m leavin’ my woman at home.

Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
My baby’s gone, with the wind.
Train roll on.
Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
My baby’s gone, with the wind.

Train roll on many miles from my home, see I’m,
I’m ridin’ my blues away, yeah.
But Tuesday you see, she had to be free.
Somehow I got to carry on.

Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
Tuesday’s gone with the wind.
My baby’s gone, with the wind.

Train roll on, oh on,
‘Cos my baby’s gone.
I’m riding my blues babe,
Trying to ride my blues.
Ride on train, ride on train.
Riding my blues babe,
Good-bye Tuesday.
Bye Tuesday.
