table console diy

Our main floor hallway was in dire need of a console. I literally searched for weeks in local stores and online classified ads for a table that was tall, narrow, and short in length to fit the tiny space between our front door and the archway to the living room. I just couldn’t find one that had all three requirements. The closest one that I could find was $350, and was literally a piece of wood with plain, black, metal legs. So what did I do? Turned to Geoff and said, “we can make that.” We did. I did. For one third of that price.

Wood and Aluminum Table Console

Supplies:

Pine laminated panel
Aluminum stair post (4)
Drill
Screws
Tape Measure
Stain
Paintbrush
Saw (optional)

Steps:

1. You may or may not have to saw the laminated panel to a specific length. Once it is the correct dimensions, the next step is to stain. Let dry completely before moving onto the following steps.

2. Using a tape measure, mark the locations for the four posts on the bottom of the wood panel. Then drill the posts in place.

3. Turn the table over, set in your chosen location, and begin to decorate. Easy!

I cannot stress enough how fun and easy this table was to construct!

I realize that this may be a strange title for a post, however, when I was thinking about how to cleverly add the word ‘kitchen’ to the title, I could only think of the Harry Nilsson song. You know, from the film Practical Magic when they’re dancing in the kitchen and this is the music that is playing in the background? My mind works in mysterious ways.

While we’re on the topic of kitchens, the one that was featured in that film is pretty much the look that I am trying to attain with ours for The Little Barn. It’s funny how you can completely put something that you like in the back of your mind, and suddenly when you’re writing a post for your blog, it comes rushing back to you with many other childish memories that tie into what you’re discussing. Come to think of it, I don’t ever recall seeing the movie in its entirety. Dammit. Now I have another one to add to my list.

I digress. I need to stop doing that. What this post is really about is Pinterest and it’s unending supply of rustic industrial kitchens. Who needs books and magazines anymore when you have the internet? Wait. I work in a library. Who needs the internet when you have … Ok, so we need it all.

Here are my most influential finds so far:

this past sunday i invited my family over for supper. not a big deal right? it’s only a few people. wrong! after it is all said and done, there are fourteen of us that make up my side of the family. to top it all off, *g* was working that day, so i was left to clean the entire house, set up the tables, chairs, and place settings, and cook almost everything by myself. complaining aside, i really didn’t mind. it was actually lots of fun!

as i mentioned in wednesday’s post, the family supper also doubled as a going away party for my brother’s family. they are moving across canada to start a new life. we wish them luck. :-)
