make these : rustic christmas candles

Rustic Christmas Candle DIYI truly believe in making Christmas gifts. In addition to the tutorials that were featured on the blog last year (here and here), I was inspired to create one that could either work on its own as a holiday craft, or as a thoughtful present for those whose homes embody a rustic feel.

Rustic Christmas Candle DIY - 1What you will need:

Several jam jars
Scented candles
Aged book
Pine leaves
Twine
Moss
Scissors
Crazy glue

Rustic Christmas Candle DIY - 2Steps:

1. Measure the width and circumference of a single jam jar. Take those measurements and trace them onto the number of book pages that equal the number of jars. Cut and remove.

2. Now trace shapes onto the sheets of paper that will cover the jars. Again, cut and remove those shapes.

3. Take a jam jar and wrap it in one of those sheets of paper. Holding the paper with one hand, wrap twine around it once over so that the paper will stay in place. Tie it in a knot, and remove the excess twine.

Rustic Christmas Candle DIY - 34. Place one or more pine leaves on the exterior of the jar. Use the twine to make it stay in place, wrapping around the jar several times.

Rustic Christmas Candle DIY - 45. Once the exterior is complete, place a dab of crazy glue onto the bottom of the candle. Now set the candle in the centre of the jar.

Rustic Christmas Candle DIY - 66. Fill the jar with moss. Then wait until it becomes dark, light the candle, and watch the shapes dance on the wall or surface. It’s quite beautiful!

The countdown is on! Only 16 days remaining!

make this : peter pan collar tee

PeterPanDIY15I am a big fan of Peter Pan collars. Especially after having short hair, I feel like a gamine-like collar and a pixie cut go hand in hand with one another. Not only do Peter Pan collars make your cut appear more feminine, but they also bring attention to your shoulders in a positive way and are a beautiful substitute for where longer hair would normally fall!

Finding a shirt with this type of collar is nearly impossible in the city where I live. Rather than buying yet another one online, I decided that this time I would simply make one. How hard could it be? It turns out that it wasn’t, just surprisingly involved for something so tiny. Yet, the results are priceless.

Here is what you’ll need to make your own Peter Pan Collar Tee:

Peter Pan DIYT-shirt
Scissors
Lace
Sewing machine
Thread
Paper
Marker
Pins

Peter Pan DIY 7-1As for the steps, please watch this link to be directed to a foolproof how-to video.

Peter Pan DIY 13I chose a men’s small t-shirt for my project. Not only was it on sale for $5, but I absolutely adored the colour and it was the only plain tee that I could find in the store. It was also beneficial since I was able to cut it into a crop top, and use the extra fabric for the collar lining. To make it even more effeminate, I made the collar into a bateau neck and sewed the sleeves and the hem of the shirt with ivory thread into a ruched trim. I recommend using a t-shirt that is a little larger, since it will allow you to turn it into your perfect fairy tale top. Get it? Peter Pan … Fairy Tale? I’m so witty. ;-)))

Peter Pan DIY 12I hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial! My next project is to sew a shirt made entirely of lace.

floral make-up : how to

Floral Wedding Make-up 5For our fifth wedding anniversary this year, my husband and I will be having a photo shoot at the same locations and in our same ceremonial outfits that we wore five years ago!

When we eloped in 2010, I did everything as frugally as possible. I purchased my dress for $9.99 on eBay, bought my shoes online, found my husband’s suit on the sale rack at Sears, took our own photos, went to a nearby Justice of the Peace, had the reception at hotel (which my siblings paid for), and did my own hair and make-up. I think that our most expensive item was my daisy bouquet and my husband’s corsage. Truthfully, we ended up making money off of our wedding. Much like a Kardashian, minus the deceit and publicity.

Also unlike a Kardashian, I strove to keep things simple that day. I am a lucky girl in that I have a sister who is an esthetician and a mum who was a hairdresser. Yet, I didn’t go to either of them for our wedding. My choice in make-up boiled down to what I was used to applying on a daily basis. This year, I would like to change that, since my preference in make-up, hair, and fashion has also changed. Now, I am a bit of a flower lover. :-)

This will be my Floral Make-Up look for our wedding anniversary session.

Floral Wedding Make-up 7Products:

Benzagel Gel
Neutrogena All-in-1 Lotion

Sephora Strawberry Macaroon Eyeshadow
Sephora Urban Decay Eyeshadow
MAC Ricepaper Eyeshadow
MAC Make Your Mark Eyeshadow
MAC Black Liquid eyeliner
Sephora Rose Pop Blush
CoverGirl Ivory Foundation
Sephora Porcelaine powder
CoverGirl Mascara
MAC Real Doll Lipstick
Sponges
Brushes

Floral Wedding Make-up 1Steps:

1. After washing your face, apply your base products. (I use Benzagel to firm and tone my skin, and Neutrogena lotion over top to keep it clear and moisturized.)

2. Take your foundation and a sponge and apply it evenly to your face and neck.

3. Next, apply the eyebrow tint. I use the same brown eyeshadow as on my eyes, mostly because it matches my brows, but also because I hate pencils. Sweep away any fallout with your foundation sponge.

4. Now for your eyes. Using the palest eyeshadow, cover your entire upper lid to the underside of your brow, as well as the tops of your cheekbones for extra shimmer.

5. Next, take the light pink shadow and apply it to your upper lid and crease of your eye.

6. Do the same with the purple eyeshadow.

7. Repeat this step once more with the brown shadow. However, be sure to go lighter on your lid and a little heavier in the crease of your eye. Then, using a smaller brush, carry that color down to the underside of your bottom lid. Wipe away any fallout.

8. Take your eyeliner and make a large sweeping cat-eye. This will probably require a few coats.

9. Once you are done lining your eye, put mascara on your top and bottom lashes.

10. Next, apply blush to your cheekbones. I decided to go a little heavier since I want my cheeks to stand out.

11. The second last step is to apply powder to your entire face. This will aid in sealing your make-up.

12. Lastly, it is time for the lipstick. My favourite is my MAC pink lipstick, but red or a dark purple would look just as nice.

Floral Wedding Make-up 4Don’t be alarmed if you seem to attract the birds and the bees with this floral make-up! Not the metaphorical kind of course. Although, that would be nice as well. ;-)))

make this: wood pallet dog bed

PalletDogBed5.jpgOne of my most popular DIY posts to date has to be a tutorial for a Burlap Dog Bed. Published almost eleven months ago to the day, this post continues to bring in dozens of visitors every week, from varying parts of the world. While I’m not sure if anyone has gone on to make a potato sack bed for their pet, I still consider the post a success based on stats alone.

I prefer not to talk incessantly about our animals, in fear that I will sound like a crazy lady who thinks that her fur babies are just the most special things to have ever walked the earth, but I do love them like mad. I also think that I love them the appropriate amount because I can definitely see their faults and know that they aren’t perfect. Far from it. However, if I have a few extra dollars or a few extra hours, my first thought is how can I spend it to make their lives better? See this Bicycle Trailer tutorial.

PalletDogBed12I have seen pallet dog beds on the internet before and I have always wanted one of my own. Well, for my dogs. I absolutely loved the look of them, and knew that they would fit in perfectly with our decor. About five months ago, I found someone online who claimed to make them for a ridiculously low price and who only lived about an hour away from us. After contacting her, we set up a future date and time to meet so that I could purchase one from her. Long story short, she completely fell off the face of the earth, deleting her photos, add, and even her email address. I think that it was a scam, since “her” photos were actually popular photos that can be found all over Pinterest. Thank goodness I didn’t pay her in advance!

Since that happened, I knew that our next pallet dog bed experience would be courtesy à la Kurysh. Do you what? The result was a success! I just know that yours will turn out perfectly as well. :-)))

PalletDogBed4Here is what you will need:

2 pallets
circular saw
drill
screws
tape measure
bar clamp

4 casters
stain
brushes
cushion

Steps:

PalletDogBed3The base.

1. Lay the first pallet down. Choose the one in the best shape. We’ll call it Pallet #1. Take its measurements, and decide what size you would like your bed to be. You may also do this before you start, either way will work!

2. Once you’ve decided on your measurements, you may need to cut Pallet #1. Try to salvage the excess wood if you decide to alter its size.

PalletDogBed11The sides.

3. There are two ways that you can attach the sides to the bed. The first (a) is the easiest way. The second (b) is the way that we chose to make it.

(a) Measure the base length and width of Pallet #1. Using Pallet #2 and the saw, remove three of its boards. Now cut two of the boards to the width of the base, and one to the length of the base of Pallet #1. Once the sides are cut, using the drill and screws, attach them to Pallet #1 so that it looks as if the bed has a head board, side board, and foot board.

PalletDogBed10(b) Measure the base length and width of Pallet #1. Using Pallet #2 and the saw, remove three of its boards. Now cut two of the boards to the width of the base, and one to the length of the base of Pallet #1. Remove also the four wood blocks that separate the top deckboard from the bottom deckboard on Pallet #2. You will need these to attach the sides to Pallet #1. Now screw the four blocks onto the four corners of Pallet #1. Once you have completed that, attach the sides by screwing them into the blocks.

PalletDogBed6The casters.

4. Turn the nearly completed Pallet #1 over. Mark a 2″ gap from the top and side of every corner. Screw one caster into each corner, just below the markings. Flip the pallet back over once they are secure.

PalletDogBed2Finishing touches.

5. Sanding the pallet is one of the most important steps in constructing a dog bed. There’s a good chance that these have been left outside to be at the mercy of all of the elements, bugs, dirt, and who knows what else? A light to moderate sanding will get rid of the pallet’s top layer of grime, while keeping the uniqueness of the stamps and other markings intact.

PalletDogBed136. Once the bed has been sanded, stain it to your colour of choice. Or if you want to keep it natural looking, choose a clear coat of Varathane.

7. Depending on the size of the pallet, you may either be able to buy a fiber-filled dog bed that will fit the pallet dog bed perfectly, or you will have to buy a foam mattress and cut it to size. May I suggest covering the foam with burlap?

8. The last step is to grab your furry loved one and let them try out the bed for size! I already know that you will love it, so they are the last (and hardest) critics to please. Fingers and paws crossed!

a week of halloween: costumes

Hallowee1.jpgOne more day until Halloween! Yesterday, I showed you my take on Wednesday Addams’ makeup. Today, you can see Geoffrey and I dressed up as Wednesday and Pugsley with our playthings Truman and Holly. Where else would we stage our family photo but in a cemetery, in true Addams Family form.

WAP.jpgWhat will you be going as tomorrow? Do you have any exciting plans?
