This couple from this wedding so reminded me of two characters in a Wes Anderson film. They were quirky and entertaining and had a charming ceremony in a location that any film director would be jealous of. I was so grateful to be part of their day!

Last week, I explained how I wanted to create a photo booth for Remy’s upcoming party as entertainment for the adults. Today, I’m going to show you what I made to ensure the children at the party wouldn’t get bored either. Also, let’s face it, adults can have fun with this DIY as well!
I created these activity books in Microsoft Word. After going online and finding clip art from the film Moonrise Kingdom, I saved the images that I thought would look best. I also made sure that they were in black and white, which makes colouring them in much easier. Then I opened a Word document, flipped the direction of the page to a landscape rather than a portrait, then added the images.
I created the first and last page from scratch. I chose a similar font to what is seen on the movie poster, and made a flag with the number 55 on it. On the back, I put the hashtag that I am hoping people will use for the party.
These activity books were quite simple to make, and only took the better part of the morning to design, print, and staple them together. I’m going to put them in a crate on a table at the party, and put a mason jar of crayons beside them. I know that my nieces are obsessed with colouring, so I think that they will go over well with the older children there.

Remy’s first birthday is on February 25. I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone! To say that I will soon have a toddler is astonishing.
I went back and forth on whether or not to have a big birthday bash for Remy. Contrary to what it may look like on Hello, Scarlett Blog, I am not one who seeks attention. I’ve never gone to any of my graduations (high school or university), we eloped for our wedding, and I haven’t celebrated my birthday with anyone other than family since I was a teenager. Instinctively, I am against hosting any large event. However, this one isn’t for me, it’s for my daughter. It’s to celebrate her and her life. While she won’t remember it, nor will she pay much attention to her gifts, I want her to look back on it through photographs and to know that we put in the effort to honour her. I also want her to see that she is and was loved by so many people. That is what ultimately changed my mind and made me pro-party.

Now that I had mentally committed to a party, the issue of where to have it arose. Given that it’s at the end of February, and is still very cold on the Canadian prairies, anything outdoors was out of the question. We were in the midst of home renovations so our house was also out. My next thought was to rent a room in one of our local libraries. I had worked in the public library system for four years, and so I knew that they were great spaces to host birthday parties. After calling my favourite two, one of them had space available. I booked it over the phone, and immediately began brainstorming party themes.

I can’t remember exactly how I came up with the theme Moonrise Kingdom, but when I did, there was no turning back. Geoffrey and I both love the movie immensely, and Remy’s own room is partly inspired by the woodland and whimsical nature of the Wes Anderson film. After looking up Moonrise Kingdom party photographs on Pinterest, I was hooked. I’m planning on going all in, and creating a room of rich, vintage colours and all things animal and forest-related.

Additionally, I also plan on dressing like Suzy Bishop. Without realizing it until now, I already have her hairstyle! I want Geoffrey to go as Sam Shakusky, but I probably won’t spring that idea on him until right before the event. ;-)))

I realize that this film isn’t as current as the other movies that I usually review. However, with all of the snow that we’ve been getting in Canada, I’ve been in a Grand-Budapest kind of mood.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is my second favourite Anderson film, after Moonrise Kingdom. That does not mean that it is not worth seeing. I still love this movie very much. On paper, it has many points that I look for in a good film. It’s quirky. It has action and adventure, murder, mystery, is set in a foreign land, is set far back in time, has class, has amazing actors, and is visually stunning. Actually, it’s probably one of the most perfect and most stunning movies that I have ever seen. Each scene is a work of art in and of itself.

“The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune – all against the backdrop of a suddenly and dramatically changing Continent.”
